Leah Kalinoff: Cultivating Sustainability and Knowledge at the Intersection of Neuroscience and Aquaponics

Senior neuroscience major and Provost's Scholar, Leah Kalinoff, is combining her passion for science and sustainability as an aquaponics research assistant at Urban REAP, a Waco-based organization devoted to fostering environmental stewardship and community empowerment. Guided by their motto, “Loving our neighbor by loving our earth,” Urban REAP focuses on creating practical, sustainable solutions that serve both people and the planet.
In her role, Leah has been instrumental in growing new plants that Urban REAP sells to the community and researching innovative ways to keep the fish in the system healthy and happy. Her work helps ensure a balanced, thriving aquaponics system that supports both sustainable food production and the well-being of the aquatic life at its core. "It’s rewarding to see how our efforts contribute to both environmental health and community well-being," Leah shares.
Leah describes her experience “as a perfect blend of science and purpose", explaining that it has deepened her understanding of how sustainability intersects with neuroscience and public health.
"The principles of systems thinking in neuroscience—understanding how different components of the brain work together—resonate with what I do at Urban REAP," she reflects. "Both fields require a holistic approach, balancing the big picture with attention to detail."
Urban REAP provides opportunities for other Baylor students to get involved as well through volunteer work and internships. "Anyone interested in working here can apply through the Baylor Student Job Board," Leah notes, encouraging peers to explore this unique opportunity to make an impact.
Beyond her research, Leah is passionate about community education, sharing the importance of sustainable practices and empowering others to take action. Her advice to fellow students:
“Stay curious and don’t hesitate to dive into new experiences—sometimes the unexpected ones are the most meaningful."
Leah’s dedication to creating a healthier, more sustainable future makes her a shining example of how Baylor students are turning their knowledge into action, showing how science can serve both people and the planet.
