Opportunities for Publication

Undergraduate Research Journals at Baylor

The Phoenix Literary Magazine

The Phoenix, a student-run magazine of Baylor University, has been a forum for students to publish their literary and artistic work for over 50 years. Each year, the magazine publishes a variety of original, unpublished pieces produced by undergraduate and graduate students, including (but not necessarily limited to) poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drawings, paintings, photography and lithography.

Submissions are reviewed by an editorial panel of students in each category, and every piece receives detailed consideration, whether or not it is accepted for publication.

Any undergraduate or graduate student may apply to be on the editorial board or submit manuscripts for publication. The editors of The Phoenix gain valuable experience by editing the pieces and deciding which will be accepted by the magazine and which will be rejected.

The Phoenix also awards a "Top Submission" in each of the three categories: poetry, prose and art & photography. They are voted on by the editorial panel and chosen by an outside judge.

Visit the magazine's website The Phoenix for their submission guidelines.

The Pulse

The Pulse is Baylor University's undergraduate scholarly publication. We publish multiple editions each year, including a printed edition in the spring and other online editions in fall and spring. The Pulse is the forum for top-quality student research in the Honors College and the University at large.

Our motto, Scientia Crescat, testifies to our belief that the university is preeminently a place where knowledge grows--through research in library and laboratory, through formal and informal dialogue, and especially through the rich connections of traditional knowledge and emergent discovery. This project of growing knowledge is not the exclusive province of professors. Students make significant contributions to knowledge; this journal seeks to recognize and promote those contributions of Baylor students.

The Pulse promotes academic writing among the undergraduate students of Baylor University. We spotlight and reward students who do exceptional writing and research, whether for their classes or for their Honors or University Scholars theses. Our editorial process challenges Baylor's best writers and thinkers to enrich and sharpen their own work.

The Pulse enhances the community of undergraduate scholarship at Baylor University. We want to encourage scholarly discourse among students who are engaged with similar ideas, problems, and texts. Our spring Pulse Lecture Series, hosted by the Honors Residential College, features a lecture by a prize-winning student whose work appears in the print publication.

The Pulse provides opportunities for students to gain experience in the publication process. The Pulse is fully edited and managed by Honors College students, who are responsible for the solicitation, selection, and preparation of manuscripts, as well as public relations and the management of the web pages. Interested students can apply to serve in any one of several areas.

The Pulse engenders a tradition of mentorship within the student community. Student leaders orient and train other students to assume leadership in the organization.

Visit the journal's website The Pulse for their submission guidelines.

Scientia

BURST (Baylor Undergraduate Research in Science & Technology), an organization for undergraduates on our campus, offers students in the sciences and technology an active, dynamic organization in which to develop their research skills and professional competence through lecture series, workshops, and a close alliance with our Undergraduate Scholar's Week.

Their final initiative is particularly pertinent to publication. They write, "Finally, we will establish a scientific journal for undergraduate research, providing successful applicants with unparalleled experience in the editing and publishing processes, critical to the transfer of knowledge which drives modern science." Click here to read the most recent publication, Scientia 2023-2024. All past publications are available on the Scientia page of the BURST website.

A complete guide to formatting, submission, qualifications, selection and other general information for Scientia can be found here.

Undergraduate Journals at other Institutions

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) and its affiliated colleges, universities, and individuals share a focus on providing undergraduate research opportunities for faculty and students at all institutions serving undergraduate students. CUR believes that faculty members enhance their teaching and contribution to society by remaining active in research and by involving undergraduates in research.

To support this effort, CUR maintains an extensive list of undergraduate journals where undergraduates can pursue publishing their work.
