City of Waco: Urban Planning Internship
The City of Waco’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) offers up to three 8–10-week, part-time (20 hours/week) internship positions supporting ongoing transportation and related urban planning projects. The program is designed for students interested in applying their academic knowledge to real-world regional planning challenges.
Major areas of overlapping interest include:
- City Planning, Transportation, and Land Use
- Data Analysis, including AI, Big Data, GIS, Statistical Modeling, and Programming
- Urban Design, Visual Communication, and Community Engagement
- Environment, Land Use, and Sustainable Mobility
Interns will work collaboratively with senior planners in a team-based environment and will participate in decision-making processes that align with their interests and areas of study. Students will contribute to multiple projects and are expected to reflect on how their work supports the development and delivery of public goods. The goal of this internship is to provide meaningful professional experience while enhancing the quality of life in the Waco region through informed planning practices.

The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) coordinates transportation planning activities for all of McLennan County. MPOs were established by the federal government and develop long-range transportation plans and also conduct short-range planning and identify projects and funding sources.
