Get to Know the OEL | Amanda Nowlin Martinez
Amanda Nowlin Martinez serves as the Assistant to the Associate Dean in the Office of Engaged Learning. This Q&A is the sixth installment in our "Get to Know the OEL" series.
Q. Who is Amanda Nowlin Martinez? Where did you come from? What is your background? And how did you make your way here?
A. Hi! I am a Waco native, born and raised! After receiving my high school degree, I attended McLennan Community College before transferring to the University of North Texas. I was accepted into the Mayborn School of Journalism and spent my college career studying mass communication, public relations, and journalism. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I entered the Dallas corporate world and spent 10+ years assisting C-level executives and directors. I never thought my career path would bring me back to Waco, but it was an easy transition – and one I’m glad I made.
Q. What is your work in the OEL? What do you most enjoy about it, and what is its impact on students?
A. I am the Assistant to our Associate Dean, Dr. Andrew Hogue. I also provide full support for all departments housed within the Office of Engaged Learning. My favorite thing about my position is my daily interaction with our students! Whether they’re just dropping by for a meeting with Dr. Hogue, it’s always a treat getting to hear updates!
Q. If we do this Q&A again in a year, what will we be celebrating?
A. In a year, I will be celebrating 8 years of working for Baylor!
Q. Who are some of your heroes, and how do they show up in your life?
A. Definitely my parents! I am an only child, so I have a very close relationship with my mom and dad. They’ve always showed up in every way possible. For example – I will never forget my first game as a Dallas Stars Ice Girl! My mom made a round trip from Waco to Dallas just to watch me perform for less than an hour (on a work night!).
Q. One of the things I appreciate about you, Amanda, is your ability to get things done and to also have a lot of fun along the way. Where do you think that comes from?
A. I have always been a goofball, and I’d like to think I’ve mastered the combination of professionalism, getting tasks done, all while having fun! I’ve been very blessed with my fellow colleagues at Baylor who have made this such a fun place to work. Life is short, don’t forget to have fun!
Q. What are some interesting things about Amanda Martinez outside work?
A. A fun fact about me is I danced professionally for the NHL's Dallas Stars for 2 seasons and the ECHL's Allen Americans for one season. Outside of Baylor, I enjoy choreographing for local cheerleading and dance teams. Another fun fact is my husband is also a Waco native, and we went to the same high school together! Our son just turned 1 year old, and we are so excited to raise him in our hometown!
