Guest Column: Argentina Summer Research Fellows Take Engaged Learning International

This summer, Baylor in Argentina’s pre-health students took their learning far beyond the classroom through the program’s PPS engaged learning course and as Argentina Summer Research Fellows, combining immersive Spanish study with engaged learning and research experiences across healthcare settings in Mendoza and the Andes. Students visited public and private hospitals and clinics, shadowed and learned from Argentine physicians and specialists, participated in high-altitude mountain medicine simulations, and developed their Spanish skills through both coursework and real-world interactions with healthcare professionals. Along the way, they investigated questions emerging from their experiences—from cultural and institutional influences on healthcare delivery and doctor-patient communication to human physiological responses to altitude and the challenges of providing medical care in extreme and remote environments—gaining new perspectives on language, culture, and medicine that they will carry into their future work in healthcare.
