Phase I: Development
Each faculty member or department interested in developing a course for the Engaged Learning Core Distribution List will work through the three-phase Development-Submission-Implementation process. The Development process involves several steps, which vary depending upon whether this is a course that exists and will be revised to incorporate engaged learning or a new course. Those steps are:
- Preliminary steps:
- Obtain informal support from your department chair to begin discussing the potential for a course for the Engaged Learning DL.
- Set up an informal consultation with the Director of Engaged Learning Curriculum, Rebecca Flavin (rebecca_flavin@baylor.edu) to discuss your course idea(s) and the proposal process. Consultations are encouraged for faculty at any development stage from idea to proposal to implementation.
- As you begin to formally develop your proposal, read the Engaged Learning Core Document and the Core Curriculum website, using these as your guide as you begin to formalize your proposal.
- The formal submission of an EL DL Course Proposal will include two documents - the Core Application (which will be signed by your department chair) and a course template (which is a partial syllabus0. Templates for both documents are available on the College's Core Website. You are encouraged to share drafts of both of these documents with the Director of Engaged Learning Curriculum (rebecca_flavin@baylor.edu) for feedback prior to formal submission.
- Begin consultation with Molly Simpson, Assistant Director for Service in OEL (molly_simpson@baylor.edu) about potential community partners and potential implementation needs before the course is taught for the first time.
Faculty are also encouraged to submits proposals for Academy for Teaching and Learning grants and/or the College of Arts & Sciences Teaching Innovation Award to support Engaged Learning course development. We ask each person developing a course to be mindful of these opportunities and their corresponding deadlines.
