Dorrell and his wife have been engaged in Christian community development among the urban poor and marginalized for fifty years, both locally and globally. The couple moved into a blighted North Waco neighborhood in 1982 and co-founded Mission Waco/Mission World in 1992, a holistic ministry currently employing 80 staff in 16-programs. He has pastored Church Under the Bridge in Waco since 1992. He has taught PPS/Community Engagement classes at Baylor for 32-years. Dorrell has written four books, traveled extensively and served on several boards. He was recognized as “person of the year” (2016) by the Wacoan Magazine and in the Waco Tribune Herald’s “Waco Today.” Jimmy and Janet received the Baylor Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017 and the Baylor’s 2024 “Pro Ecclesia Medal of Service Award.” They have four children (one deceased) and eleven grandchildren.
